Figuring out how many lessons you need comes down to two things

One of the most common questions I get is how many lessons do I need to feel great on my wedding day. And the answer is that it depends.

“It depends.”

Here are some ways to think about it.

Fancy footwork

"How much do you want to learn?"

The number of lessons depends on how complicated the steps and choreography. For basic choreography built on a few steps, I recommend three lessons (one hour long lesson per minute of choreography plus one lesson to polish). More complicated steps and choreography take a bit more time. Some of my clients prefer to just learn some steps that go to their song and that can be done in just one lesson.

Practice makes perfect

"How much are you going to practice?"

Another component is how much time do you have to practice between lessons. It is completely optional to practice between lessons, but if you save your practice time to your lesson time, then it will likely take a couple run throughs for the steps to come back to you and for the movement to feel smooth again. That's totally fine, you just may need more lessons to be able to learn everything you want to learn.

Here is what is typical to cover with different numbers of lessons:

One lesson

In one lessons, we can easily cover the basics. I'll pick out three to four moves that match your song and also show you how to end in a classic dip.

Two lessons

With an extra lesson, we can cover a few more steps and start to plan out what steps work well on what part of the music.

Three lessons

You can tackle some easy choreography over the course of three lessons. We'll go through what steps to do on each part of the music and how to do those steps with finesse.

Four lessons

Four lessons gives you the time to learn a harder basic step and dance it with pizazz. We'll also have more time to work on the technique of the dance steps so that you feel confident on your special day.

Five lessons

I recommend five lessons for those who want to do more intricate steps and choreography. This is especially key if you are looking to blend more than one song and dance style together for first dance.

More lessons

Additional lessons give us more time to build a long or more intricate dance and polish every aspect of the movement, so that you know each move inside and out.

It's definitely more of an art than a science though, so let's chat through what you're looking to do and then get started and see how it goes. We can always adjust along the way to get you feeling great and ready to go for your moment to dance.
